ISSL Social Norms Program Overview
The ISSL Social Norms Project is an initiative designed to change student attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol use. Students at Chaminade, MICDS, Nerinx, St. Louis Priory, Thomas Jefferson, Villa Duchesne, Visitation Academy, John Burroughs, and Westminster Christian Academy are currently participating. The program developed by Northern Illinois University has been successfully employed in colleges and universities across the country, but rarely has the approach been tried anywhere in the U.S. at the high school level. By using data from surveys taken by the participating students, faculty and parents it is demonstrated that the “social norm” is not to drink at an early age, and that fewer than most parents, teachers and kids think are actually engaging in underage drinking. It also provides kids with strategies they can employ to resist the pressure of engaging in substance abuse and incentives not to engage in this sometimes tragic behavior. Special thanks and recognition to Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc. for the major gift to support a large part of this program.
