Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, Rachel Simmons

In this workshop, learn the causes and forms of psychological aggression, along with strategies to reduce existing levels of aggression and intervene during acute bullying situations. Topics include but are not limited to: Relational aggression: the use of friendship as a weapon; the role of relationships in girls’ psychological health; the psychology of bullying and aggression; “I didn’t do it:” female aggression and denial; cyberbullying and digital citizenship; the use of humor (“just kidding,” “no offense”) to harm; scripts to help students through challenging social situations; dealing with aggressive body language in the classroom and conflict resolution protocols for girls.
Rachel Simmons is the author of The New York Times best seller Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, the first book to explore the phenomenon of bullying among girls. A national expert on girls, Simmons began studying female aggression at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. She is founding director of the Girls Leadership Institute and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Dateline NBC, and other national programs.

Developing Critical Thinking Skills, Ann Anzalone

This workshop is designed to provide an understanding of teaching thinking skills and how to actively engage students in the learning process. Understanding how the brain learns is key to achieving thinking success. Teaching specific study skills, thinking techniques and tools empower students to be in control of their own learning process. Teach students how to be attuned to themselves and their learning styles learn strategies to develop students’ study and critical thinking skills, and experience the impact of the mind-body connection in the learning process. Use this information to structure lessons, to accelerate learning, to teach study skills and to teach critical thinking skills. Learn six techniques to develop critical thinkers.
Ann Anzalone is a nationally known, dynamic speaker and experienced trainer. For the last 25 years she has conducted workshops for K-12 teachers, administrators and parents, as well as for Business and corporations. She teaches graduate classes at Wright State University and McGregor School, Antioch University. She serves as a consultant for adult students, parents and their children regarding learning styles, educational plans and academic performance. Ms. Anzalone has teaching certificates in Elementary Education and Special Education, Learning Disabilities, Behavioral Disorders, Educable Mentally Retarded. Prior to being an in-service presenter, Ann has been honored as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and was listed in Who’s Who in American Education.
Ann is a teacher’s teacher, specializing in communications skills, community building, learning styles, cooperative learning, study skills and stress management. She is an energetic and enthusiastic presenter. Her presentations are practical and focused on the development of techniques, strategies and tools to optimize learning and communication skills.

Building a Strong and Meaningful Mathematics Foundation for All Learners: Grades Kindergarten to 4th Grade, Helene Sherman, Ed.D.

Developing a strong sense of number throughout engaging, conceptually based lessons provides early learners the foundation to build long-term academic success in mathematics. This workshop offers teachers opportunities to work with hands - on relevant activities for developing understanding and practicing big ideas in mathematics, - place value, whole numbers and fractions. Differentiated intervention approaches related to common error patterns as well as to students’ on and above level content needs will be included.
Helene J. Sherman, Ed.D., is a professor and the associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has taught at the elementary, middle school mathematics, community college, and university levels, and she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in K-8 mathematics teaching methods. Dr. Sherman has had her work published in numerous professional educational journals and has coauthored three books for teaching metric measurement across the curriculum. She has directed and co directed federal and statewide grant projects in St. Louis area school districts, focusing on classroom applications of mathematics teaching methods. She presents workshops throughout the country on methods for teaching mathematics to elementary and middle grade students. Dr. Sherman has won several teaching awards, among which are the 2003 Missouri Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 2000 College of Education Distinguished Teaching Award, the 1998 Emerson Electric Outstanding Teaching Award, and the 1997 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders and Effective Teaching Supports and Strategies, Anne Schad, L.C.S.W.

The St. Louis metropolitan area has one of the highest populations of children with autism spectrum disorders in the country, 1 in 83 boys according to the latest numbers from Autism Speaks. It is imperative that educators and school personnel have an understanding of the behaviors and characteristics associated with autism spectrum disorders as well as those strategies, supports and services needed to support them in the school setting.
Ann Schad, L.C.S.W., has worked in the field of social work for the past 25 years. She has worked in the areas of child abuse/neglect, foster care, adoption and eating disorders. For the past 18 years she has worked in various capacities in an autism treatment center, TouchPoint Autism Services (formerly known as Judevine Center for Autism.) Mrs. Schad currently conducts ADOS (Autism Diagnostic and Observation Schedule) assessments, facilitates parent and sibling support groups, educates medical students and performs school observations/consultations as well as attends IEP meetings. She also provides training and education with regards to autism spectrum disorders to parents, other agencies and organizations as needed.

The president of NAIS, based on the latest research from NAIS (NAIS Trends 2010-11, “The Red Book”) and from his observations from the field, Bassett articulates, ruminates, and engages in conversation about the critical challenges and opportunities facing American education in general and independent school education in particular: affordability, governance, leadership, teacher recruitment, national “core standards,” etc.
