Burroughs is a coeducational college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12. The Burroughs experience is distinguished by objectives set by our founders in 1923 including a mix of informality, community service and traditions such as morning assembly and family-style lunch which bring us together daily. Our world-class faculty average more than 20 years teaching experience and 80% hold advanced degrees. They interact with students beyond the classroom in an atmosphere that fosters independence while providing individual academic and personal support. Our liberal arts curriculum is balanced by extensive opportunities in athletics as well as the fine, practical and performing arts. We put a premium on ethics, diversity, student government, technology, outdoor education and a variety of international programs. Our size is critical. Maximum enrollment is 600, averaging 100 students per grade. Students engage in more than 36 student-run, faculty-sponsored activities -- from Iron Chef to Amnesty International, from chess to cheerleading. Each seventh grade class draws from about 30 public, parochial and independent schools and typically 25% of those identify as being students of color. Admission is based on school records, recommendations, an entrance examination, and an interview. Personal qualities are a major consideration. Admission decisions are made prior to and separate from decisions regarding tuition aid. More than 20% of our students receive tuition aid, and no one should fail to apply to Burroughs because of financial need.
