Burroughs is a coeducational college preparatory day school for students in grades 7-12. The Burroughs experience is distinguished by objectives set by our founders in 1923 including a mix of informality, community service and traditions such as morning assembly and family-style lunch which bring us together daily. Our world-class faculty average more than 20 years teaching experience and 82% hold advanced degrees. They interact with students beyond the classroom in an atmosphere that fosters independence while providing individual academic and personal support. Our liberal arts curriculum is balanced by extensive opportunities in athletics as well as the fine, practical and performing arts.
We put a premium on ethics, diversity, student government, technology, outdoor education and a variety of international programs. Our size is critical. Maximum enrollment is 600, averaging 100 students per grade. Students engage in more than 36 student-run, faculty-sponsored activities -- from Iron Chef to Amnesty International, from chess to cheerleading. Our current seventh grade class comes from 23 public, parochial and independent schools and 24 zip codes. Of the current seventh graders, 32% identify as students of color.
Admission is based on school records, recommendations, an entrance examination and an interview. Personal qualities are a major consideration. More than 20% of our students receive tuition aid, and no one should fail to apply to Burroughs because of financial need.

Burr Oak Camp
Monday, Jun 17, 2013 — Friday, Jul 26, 2013
Burr Oak Camp offers a traditional coeducational day camp on the campuses of John Burroughs School and Community School. Especially well-known for its swimming instruction, highly qualified instructors group young swimmers by age and ability. In addition to the swimming program, Burr Oak offers a range of activities, including arts and crafts, woodworking and games that are tailored to the abilities and interests of each age group. Professional educators and coaches oversee the camp and lead many of the activities. College-aged and high school-aged students serve as counselors. Younger counselors and counselors-in-training assist senior counselors. The camp day runs from 9 am until 3 pm, with extended day options available. Three two-week sessions are offered for children in preschool through sixth grade. Lunch is provided.
